Code complexity is a key characterizer of code quality. Therefore, much effort has been exerted on understanding and measuring it. This report adds to the existing knowledge by explaining how different code elements create two types of complexity – essential and accidental – and how much each of the elements increase complexity.

Vard Antinyan is the technical expert of software quality at Volvo Car Group, Gothenburg, Sweden. His research interests include software process, quality, complexity, and measurement. Antinyan received his Ph.D. in software engineering from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Contact him at vard.antinyan@volvocars.com.
