Diversity and Inclusion Statement
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion are central to the goals of the ACM SIGSOFT and all of its conferences. Equity at its heart is about removing barriers, biases, and obstacles that impede equal access and opportunity to succeed. Diversity is fundamentally about valuing human differences and recognizing diverse talents. Inclusion is the active engagement of Diversity and Equity.
To achieve the above goals of equity, diversity, and inclusion, ESEC/FSE 2021 aims for
- Committee diversity—recruit qualified members of the organization committee, members of technical committees, and reviewers such that (1) the resulting populations are diverse with respect to gender, home institutions, geography, and research expertise; and (2) committees’ memberships vary from those in previous years.
- Speaker diversity—recruit invited speakers and panelists from diverse populations, backgrounds, and research areas within software engineering, to increase diversity in thinking and perspective.
- Mitigate biases—promote double-anonymous reviewing, as a means to mitigate subconscious biases against national origin, gender, sexual orientation, and race.
- Registration fee waiver—in addition to merit and need, decisions about registration fee waivers will consider diversity with respect to gender, age, geography, and research area. In keeping with the foregoing goals, ESEC/FSE 2021 welcomes all authors, regardless of nationality. If a presenting author of an accepted paper for ESEC/FSE 2021 has difficulty in participating in the conference, we will work with them to arrange an alternate method to participate.
ESEC/FSE is organized under the aegis of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM). ACM promotes diversity and inclusion efforts throughout the organization. Diversity is achieved when the people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences are given a chance to voice their viewpoints (“the who”). Inclusion is achieved when the environment is characterized by behaviors that welcome and embrace diversity (“the how”).
